The reigning national handball league champions, Police Handball Club, have started training in preparation for this year’s African Handball Champions League.
The tournament is scheduled to be played in Ivory Coast from October 19th to 29th.
Police head coach Sgt. Dismas Turatsinze said that “intensive training” started on Tuesday at Kimisagara Youth Sports Centre.
“We haven’t fared well on the continental scene in the past, and those are the challenges we continue learning from. We want to prepare ourselves very early both tactically and in terms of fitness,” said Sgt. Turatsinze.
Turatsinze, a former Police Handball Club player, has so far guided the record six-time national league champions to four trophies this season. They include the National championship, Carre d'As, Heroes Day Cup, Genocide Memorial Cup and the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO) cup.
“We started this season with some new players and we were outstanding in all the tournaments we participated in, we want to build on that as we head into the African Handball Champions League come next month,” Turatsinze said.
The law enforcers finished the national league championship unbeaten, a feat they recorded for the third time following the similar achievement in 2014 and 2015 seasons.
