Police seize 5000 pellets of cannabis

Police in Nyabihu District seized about 5000 of pellets of cannabis from a drug dealers. The suspected drug dealers were transporting the narcotics on a motorcycle, Police said.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said the traffickers abandoned both the drugs and the motorcycle when police pursued him as he tried to flee.

"On March 16, two drug dealers along Nyabihu-Rubavu highway, who were traveling on a motorcycle noticed a police checkpoint and branched off the nearby feeder road. Police pursued them to ascertain why they were running away from the Police. During the pursuit, motorcyclist abandoned the motorcycle and the luggage and run away but the person he was transporting was arrested. When officers searched the luggage they had they found it was loaded with rolls of cannabis," Gasasira explained.

The suspect was taken into custody and the motorcycle RD 439D, impounded.

CIP Gasasira urged the public to avoid engaging in the trade of narcotic drugs and switch to other legal and profitable businesses.

He also warned motorcyclist against facilitating and transporting drug dealers and criminals in general.

The federation of motorcycle cooperatives recently announced that it will blacklist any member that will be caught in drug related crimes, among others.

 “Fighting trade and consumption of such illicit drugs remains among the police top priorities. We will not relent until all  involved are apprehended,” CIP Gasasira, calling upon the general public to strengthen cooperation and information sharing on drug dealers.
