The Rwanda National Police Fire and Rescue Brigade, on Tuesday, rescued two people from a pit latrine, who include a newly born baby allegedly dumped by it mother after birth in Jali sector of Gasabo district.
The second victim is a 54-year old woman in Kinyange cell, Gitega sector of Nyarugenge district who fell in after the cover of the pit, which was weak, caved in.
Senior Supt. Jean de Dieu Gashiramanga, the Commanding Officer of Fire and Rescue Brigade said baby was retrieved alive and taken to Gihorwe Health Centre while the woman was taken to the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK).
The baby was reported by a neighbor, who had it groaning in their pit.
SSP Gashiramanga said, investigations are underway to arrest the suspect who escaped after committing the inhuman act.
“We received phone calls about the two similar incidents and we intervened immediately and saved both the baby and the elderly woman,” SSP Gashiramanga said.
He appealed to the general population to always inform them in time in case of any disaster including fire outbreak.
