Rwanda National Police (RNP) appeals to the general population to be wary of individuals who want to exploit this commemoration period to conduct criminal acts such as theft and burglary.
While the rest of the people join together in commemoration activities at villages, it has been observed that wrongdoers use this time to break into houses to steal property.
A case in point happened on April 8 in Gasaka Sector, Nyamagabe District, when thieves broke into offices of a cooperative known as UNICOOPAGI, and stole three laptops, two desktops, and Rwf180,000.
They conducted the theft when other members of the community had gone to attend commemoration events.
Police arrested a suspect, Cyprien Uwitonze, who is believed to have aided the thieves and further investigations are being conducted.
The Southern Region Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Simon Mukama, called on residents to be patriotic and attend the discussions and urged them to be mindful of their property.
"First make sure that doors and windows are locked and all the property are indoor. Police will ensure that peace and security are high in this period, and we call upon the community to be part of it," he said.
He also reminded Rwandans to be active in community policing activities to promote partnership against crimes.
