Rwanda National Police have arrested a man and a woman who stole several items belonging to Aprana Singh- an Indian national working in Kigali.
The suspects identified as Eric Munyaneza 25, and Aimerance Mukantabana 36, both house helps of Singh were arrested shortly after their employer reported the theft of her electronics including a laptop and home theatre and money valued at over Rwf100,000.
While speaking to journalists, Singh expressed how delight she was for police quick response and recovery of her belongings.
She said the thieves stole her items on September 1 at around 09:00am.
and within a space of one hour police had recovered the items and apprehended the suspects
“I received a phone call from one of my house helps that unknown people had stolen my items at home. I immediately rushed home and indeed I found out that there was something out of the ordinary; power had been cut off during the time of robbery to have the CCTVs off,” she said.
“I reported the theft to Police who arrived immediately and started investigations. They took finger and foot prints of everyone that had come or was at the house and about an hour later they told me the finger prints matched with those of my employees.
Police recovered all the stolen items at Mukantabana’s home in Kacyiru and handed them back to Singh.
“I was surprised how the police recovered the items in the quickest time possible and manner in which police was conducting interrogations and investigations made me feel comfortable and confident ; they were extremely too professional and on time,” said Singh.
Reacting to the case, Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Celestin Twahirwa said; “We discovered that the suspects planned the robbery and intentionally switched off electricity which operates the CCTVs. We call upon people to employ individuals that they trust and not to keep money at home.”
Article 300 of the Penal Code stipulates that, any person who commits theft without violence or threats shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of 2 to 5 times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.
Article 301 further provides that If the offender commits the crime using the Keys of the owner of the property or jumping over the fence, the punishment will be doubled.
