Thirty participants from Rwanda National Police, Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), Ministry of Justice and Immigration, on June 24, began three-day training on the use of the Interpol communication tool called I-24/7.
I-24/7 is software that connects all the Interpol member countries to trace wanted persons, stolen and lost documents and vehicles among others.
The training being held at the RNP headquarters in Kacyiru is, therefore, aimed at enlightening and equipping participants with knowledge and skills on how to use it and detect wanted persons and other stolen or lost property.
The training was organized by RNP in partnership with the international police organization – Interpol.
The tool has since been decentralized to all borders.
Julius Maritim, a representative from Interpol said the training will be helpful in detecting crimes and enable police around the world to work together to make it a safe place.
He mentioned that cybercrimes like fraudulent sales, hacking, stealing of personal and private information online.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Administration and Personnel, Stanley Nsabimana, while officially launching the training, observed that” national boundaries are becoming meaningless to criminals.”
“Effective and timely police communication across borders is very essential to exchange information so as to trace terrorists and other criminals,” DIGP Nsabimana said.
By giving prosecution, immigration and RRA access to I-24/7 database, he said, it will enhance border security control and ease the work and information flow.
“Cyber crime is a threat to the entire world. There is need for cooperation among Institutions concerned to combat them,” DIGP Nsabimana said.
He appealed to the officers to make good use of the training to acquire knowledge and skills that would enable them handle cyber-related crimes effectively.
Among the areas to be exploited during the three days are National Central Bureau assessment based on the exchange of good practices and the 24 Interpol service standards, operational databases like stolen and lost travel documents (SLTD), stolen Motor-vehicles (SMV), nominal and Interpol child sexual exploitation (ICSE).
