A total of 126 police officers, on July 4, returned home after a successful one year peacekeeping mission under the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (Minustah).
The officers under Rwanda Formed Police Unit (RWAFPU IV) are part of the contingent of 140 officers, who include 17 females that was deployed in Haiti on the same date last year for humanitarian assistance and peace building.
The returning officers arrived at Kigali international airport aboard Ethiopian Airline and were received by Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Butera, Commissioner for Operations and other senior officers.
The RWAFPU IV returns home with UN medals for their outstanding and professional services in the Caribbean nation.
The mandate of Rwanda police officers is to support UN activities and to build the capacity of the Haitian National Police.
However, the role of Rwanda FPUIV went beyond to support people’s welfare, enhance development through maintaining infrastructure and environmental protection.
CP Butera thanked them for representing their country ably and successfully and returning home safely.
The contingent commander, Chief Supt. Peter Hodari said they are happy for accomplishing their mandate and returning home with dignity.
RWAFPUIV was replaced by another contingent of 140 police officers under RWAFPUV headed by CSP Freddie Murenzi, who left on July 2.
