Police officers complete training in use of hi-tech traffic speed radar

TEN Police officers attached to the department of Traffic and Road Safety completed a week-long training of trainers’ course on use of the newly acquired ‘Advanced Speed Laiser’ used to measure the speed of cars.

Chief Supt. Egide Ruzigamanzi, the Deputy Commissioner for the traffic department, during the official closing of the course, yesterday, said the course is among the “wide range of Rwanda National Police road safety measures to prevent accidents.”

He challenged the pioneers of this training to carry on this exercise in an efficient manner so that the menace of road accidents caused by over speeding vehicles is prevented.

The Advanced Speed Laiser machine has the capacity to measure speed, video recording, and identify vehicles registration number unlike the previous one which could only indicate the speed.

In a joint meeting between RNP and ministries and institutions charged with ensuring road safety, in August, agreed among others, to oversee the installation of speed governors in public vehicles and heavy trucks, establish roadside stations and scale-up the issuance of vocational cards to regulate performance of drivers and monitor hours of operations of drivers.
