Police officers complete anti-GVB training

Forty seven Police officers, on May 25, completed five-day training on how to identify, fight and prevent incidences of gender-based crimes and how to handle victims.

They were also taken through the categories of gender-related crimes, the use of Community Policing program to prevent such crimes, how to work with Isange One Stop centre in handling cases of GBV and supporting victims and family planning.

Isange, a Kinyarwanda word meaning “feel at home” is a centre that offers free medical, psycho-socio and legal support to victims of GBV.

They were also given skills in fire-fighting.

Chief Superintendent Vincent Sano, Commissioner for Human Resources Management and Development in RNP, who presided over the official closing of the course urged participants to put to use the acquired to effectively accomplish the mission of the force, especially in combating GBV cases.

Training is part of the force’s priorities to capacitate officers in crime prevention.

He urged the officers to utilize and share the acquired skills and knowledge with other officers in their respective units and always provide quick response to survivors of GBV.

He also appealed to them to engage much in prevention by identifying families with domestic conflicts and working with the community in the process.

Inspector of Police Jeanne d’Arc Mukandahiro, one of the participants commended the leadership of RNP for organizing the course adding that it has increase their knowledge and understanding on the vice and how best to address it.
