Marine Police officers on June 22, averted a potential tragedy after rescuing a man from River Kagera.
The 34-year-old Noel Ndagijimana, who hails from Rwamagana District had visited friends in Rusumo when they convinced him to sail with them in the river.
The good reception, however, was a deliberate move by the so called friends to rob him of his money.
Supt. Celestin Musuhuke, the District Police Commander of Kirehe, who confirmed the successful rescue said that said that "the so called friends connived to drown Ndigijimana in the river to take the money he had."
"Ndigijimana had visited one Gerald Havugimana who lives near Rusumo boarder post. Havugimana together with his colleague identified as Ramzdan Nshimiyimana convinced their visitor to go fishing," the DPC explained.
The so called friends had convinced him to believe that they would get him fish to take back home.
"When they reached in the waters they intentionally made the boat capsize, took the money Ndigijimana had, left him behind for the dead and returned back to the shores," Supt. Musuhuke explained.
The helpless Ndagijimana was rescued by the Police marine operating in river kagera after they heard him screaming for help.
Ndagijimana thanked the Police for the quick rescue. "I can't believe that the person I called a friend and I took my time to even visit him tried to kill me," said Ndagijimana.
"So far, one suspect, Ramadhani Nshimiyimana has been arrested while Havugimana is still on the run and efforts are still underway to arrest him as well," Supt. Musuhuke said.
Police also called upon anyone with information that would facilitate to bring Havugimana to justice to come forward.
The public were also reminded to always call the hotline 110, and 0788311549 for any Police marine intervention.
