Police in Karongi recovers construction materials stolen from Chinese firm

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has once again recovered construction material stolen from a company called China Road and Bridge, a company doing road construction in Karongi District.

The material recovered on July 6 included 320 liters of diesel, 120 liters of grease, as well as assorted vehicle spare parts.

A similar incident happened in May last year, when police recovered 850 liters stolen from this same company.

This time round, the stolen material were recovered from a pickup truck that was bound for Kigali from Karongi, although the suspects escaped before they could be arrested.

The Police Spokesperson for Western Province, Superintendent Emmanuel Hitayezu, noted that information that led to the recovery of the material was provided by a resident, which is an indication of the strong community policing initiative taken on by residents in the area.

“The company had filed a case about the stolen equipment, so investigations were being conducted and residents also provided credible information. On July 6, officers halted the suspected vehicle but the suspects abandoned it and run away,” he said.

“We successfully recovered the material and returned them back to the company. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the suspects. The initiative of community policing in the area is very strong and it should continue in order to safeguard lives and property.”

He appealed to companies and the business community to be security sensitive and protect their equipment and premises against any illegal activities.

"Police will continue to protect people and their property by fighting such crimes that try to undermine economic and development activities. However, it is important that the business community also takes up initiatives such as installing CCTV cameras and having security guards to watch over the premises," he said.

A similar incident happened at the beginning of this year, when Police in Kigali recovered about 460 construction pipes worth Rwf14 million stolen from China Civil Engineering  Construction Company (CCECC) offices in Kinyinya sector, Gasabo District.

Police appreciates the enormous participation of the public in detecting crime.
