Police impersonator arrested in Ngoma

A 23-year-old man has been arrested in Ngoma District for allegedly passing off as a police officer and defrauding unsuspecting members of the community.

The suspect was attempting to defraud a resident of Remera Sector, Ndekwe Cell in Rwamutabazi Village, apparently to facilitate the release of detained relative.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Eastern region Police spokesperson, said the suspect known as Irene Twiyisenge was arrested on March 13, after the would-be victim informed police of the suspect's ill motives.

"He approached the would-be victim and told him that he was investigating a case related to a crime committed by his detained brother, and wanted to assist the family as he has been helping other people but paid for his effort," CIP Twizeyimana said.

“Police officers were dispatched and they arrested the impersonator who was trying to defraud people," he added.

“We understand that these sort of criminals can be extremely convincing and we’d urge people to be vigilant. Always ask for identification and if someone says they are a police officer and you aren’t sure, please call any known Police contacts or emergency toll-free line 112; don't fall prey, detained people are released by the law not a certain individual," he emphasized.
