Paul Muhawenawe scored 8 goals to help Police overcome St Alloys in the final and win this year’s Heroes’ Day handball tournament on Saturday at Kimisagara youth sports centre.
In the game that ended 34-23 in favor of Police, the 25-year-old talisman scored 5 quick goals in the first 30 minutes of the game and added three more in the second period to ensure Police’s dominance and add yet more silverware to their trophy cabinet.
Last season’s league top scorer, Gilbert Mutuyimana contributed with six goals for the league champions, who have now won all trophies on the local scene from last season.
On its way to the final, Police had beat Nyakabanda 26-17 and APR 32-24 in the preliminaries.
“We want to make a repeat of last season and win everything. This is a good start to the year,” Police coach, Antione Ntabanganyimana, said.
Jean Nepo Niyishaka of St Alloys was named the tournament’s best player having scored 30 goals in three games.
Meanwhile, Apega Gahindiro defeated ES Mukingi 13-12 to lift the women’s title.
Police become this year in fine form by becoming the first sports franchise in the country to win a trophy in 2015, after claiming the “Impano N’impamba” Cup on January 11.
The club scooped all trophies available last year where the club scooped all the seven tournaments that were held.
Since its founding in 2003, Police Handball Club staffed its trophy cabinet with 22 trophies, among which include three national league cups, four Heroes Day Tournament, four Liberation Day cups and three Carré d’ AS cup.
Sport is one of the means the force uses to engage the public in community policing and crime prevention in particular, and promoting sports development in the country.
