Police Handball Club became the first sports franchise in the country to win a trophy in 2015, after claiming the “Impano N’impamba” Cup on January 11.
The one day tournament was organized by Gorilla Handball Club and attracted five clubs, with the aim of raising awareness of the sport especially among the young people.
“This is a very fruitful moment for Police Handball Club; the team just can’t stop winning, which indicates the passion and hard work from the players and the entire coaching staff,” Police Hand ball coach IP, Antoine Ntabanganyimana said.
“We have begun the year in a nice way and we will even work harder to achieve more. Credit to the players who always have the hunger to win more,” he added.
Police Handball Club met Gorilla Handball Club in the final, after both clubs had emerged victors from their respective groups.
The final was a heated game, where both clubs showed strength and agile, although Police’s experience and focus proved the difference in a march that ended 30-22 in favor of Police.
The law enforcers were in pool A with Kigoma and Nyakabanda, beating them 20-15 and 16-8 respectively to set the final encounter with the organizers, who had eliminated Groupe Scolaire Rumbura with 23-9 goals.
Top scorer of the tournament was Police Constable Gilbert Mutuyimana with an individual score of ten goals while his teammate Jean Paul Muhawenayo scored 8.
Police Handball Club has proved a handful for other clubs by dominating most tournaments, particularly last year where the club scooped all the seven tournaments that were held.
Since its founding in 2003, Police Handball Club staffed its trophy cabinet with 22 trophies, among which include three national league cups, four Heroes Day Tournament, four Liberation Day cups and three Carré d’ AS cup.
Sports is one of the means the force uses to engage the public in community policing and crime prevention in particular, and promoting sports development in the country.
