Police Handball Club retain ‘Carré d’As Cup’

The 2015 national league handball champions, Police rounded up the season in style after beating APR 35-31 on Saturday to retain the ‘Carré d’As Cup.’

The Carré d’As tournament is played on a round-robin among the top four clubs in the league.

This year’s tourney brought together champions Police as well as APR, Ecole Secondaire Kigoma and College Inyeramihigo, who finished in second, third and fourth place respectively.

Sgt. Albert Sibomana’s Police eased through to the finals after seeing off College Inyemeramihigo of Gisenyi on 51 goals to 33.

The first half ended 11-10 in favour of the law enforcers, and Police maintained the lead even in the second half scoring 24 other goals.

It was Jean Paul Muhawenayo’s memorable evening as he scored 18 individual goals for Police.

This is the fourth time Police have won Carré d’As Cup, after triumph in 2011, 2012, and 2014.

Police retained the league title with 49 points scoring 584 goals and conceding 379.

Police to represent Rwanda in African Handball Championship

Meanwhile Police Handball Club will leave this Sunday to Nador in Morocco to represent Rwanda in this year’s African Handball Championship.

The continental tournament that brings together only national league winners will be played between October 21 and 30th.  

Police Handball Club will be representing the country for the third successive season after three years dominating the local league.

Meanwhile Coach Sgt. Albert Sibomana has named his final 14-player squad for the African tournament.

The 2015 national league champions are currently in intensive training at Kimisagara Youth Center in preparation for the continental tournament as well as the Carred’As tournament set for this Saturday.

Sgt. Sibomana says he has confidence in the squad that he has summoned for the continental event, “We need to use our successful campaign this year as a motivating factor and we are confident we can make it.”

“I selected the players according to how they have been performing in the league,” he added. The team is set to fly to Morocco on October 18 for their second appearance since debuting in 2012.
