Police Handball Club has successfully defended its trophy by becoming the champions of the National Handball League Trophy for the second year in a row.
The law enforcers on October 3 beat Rwanda College of Education, (former KIE), 49 points against 15, to get 54 points with only one game left to be played.
The second placed APR has 50 points, meaning that, even if APR wins its last game of the season next Saturday, they will not be able to overtake Police.
The game against Rwanda College of Education was played at the Kimisagara Playground and was dominated by police scorers Gilbert Mutuyimana and Jean Paul Muhawenayo who each scored eight points for Police as the top scorers in the game.
The club’s coach, Albert Sibomana, was full of praise for his players, noting that they played with a lot of passion throughout the season, which enabled them to overcome strong oponents.
“Next Saturday after our match against APR, we shall be named champions and officially be given the trophy. This is a dream come true for many Police players who sacrificed a lot, trained hard and managed to eventually stay on top of the table,” he said.
“This trophy is going to be very significant because we lifted it last year. Retaining it is an achievement that we are very proud of.”
The national league trophy becomes the forth trophy that Police Handball Club lifted this year – after the they won the Labor Day Cup, Impano n’Impamba and the Heroes Day Tournament trophy they won in January, February and May this year respectively.
Meanwhile, the Police Inter Unit Football competition is continuing with lots of matches being played throughout the country.
In the games played yesterday, Police Band beat National Police College Musanze 2-1 at the Kicukiro playground, while the Northern Region Police drew with Central Region Police 1-1 at Gicumbi playground.
The Southern Region Police also drew 2-2 with Western Region Police at Huye playground, while Police Training School Gishari beat Police Headquarters Kacyiru 5-0.
