The year 2015 continues to go as planned for Rwanda’s most successful handball club – Police Handball Club – which has gone further to cement its number one position in the national league.
In its latest endeavors during a match that was speculated to be a stun test for the champions against Gicumbi Handball Club on Friday April 24, Police seared through with an emphatic win, managing a score of 34-23.
Gilbert Byatsinzwe was the match top scorer with eight goals, followed by fellow teammate Nolbert Duteteriwacu, who managed seven goals.
The win was the fifth in a row for a club that began the year in great form, and currently sits at the top of the league table with 15 points from 5 games, while second placed APR Handball Club sits at second position with 13 points.
Police Handball Club’s impressive season has also seen them score more than any other club, with 166 goals and concede the least at 93 record this season.
“This club continues to amaze in many ways, particularly on the discipline and hardworking attitude of the players. They trained so hard and have a good mentality of teamwork, which has pushed them to achieve very many things,” Club Coach, Assistant Inspector of police Antoine Ntabaganyimana, said.
“The league has very many good sides, so we have to work even harder to maintain this high level and ensure that we go all the way and retain the title.”
The win on Friday gives Police Handball Club a major boost ahead of the forthcoming Genocide Memorial Cup slated for June 6 and 7 in Kigali, which will host a variety of local and regional clubs.
The defending champions also bolstered their camp with six new signings including prolific strikers, Jean Paul Muhawenayo and goalkeeper Samuel Bananimana, who have provided the club with an extra edge against their main rivals.
The law enforcers enjoyed domination in 2014 by winning all trophies available including; the national league, the Beach tournament, Labour Day Cup, Memorial Cup, Liberation Cup, Carré d’ AS cup and the Rwanda Cup tournament.
