Going by all the fabulous achievements that Police Handball Club made in 2014, this year offers yet another great challenge.
According to the club’s head coach, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Antoine Ntabanganyimana, this year’s goal is clear and precise; to surpass last year’s achievements.
The handball club won all the seven trophies last year. It has now won all trophies in the three handball tournaments played this year.
The first trophy of 2015 was collected in January when Police Handball Club lifted the “Impano N’impamba” Cup. This was followed by the Heroes Day Tournament trophy in February.
Last Saturday on May 9, the club defended its third trophy – the Labor Day tournament, marking a perfect start to the year.
In the Labor Day Tournament finals, Police overcame Gicumbi by 37 goals against 26.
“This year has gone well as planned, but it does not mean that we will be complacent. There are tougher competitions coming up ahead and we need to be alert, strong and focused,” AIP Ntabanyimana said.
“The players are hungrier to win more. They are not satisfied by past glories, and this is a very good attitude because it helps the team to be strong and stay united.”
Some of the club’s talismans include Zakarie Tuyishime, who has managed to be top scorer in all the three tournaments that have been played so far, as well as Gilbert Mutuyimana and Haruna Bizimana.
“We practice as a team and play with an attitude of teamwork. This is what has helped us to be as successful as we have been,” Tuyishime said.
“It is an honor to be representing RNP in the handball tournaments and we are appreciative of those who come out to support us as we play. We have important fixtures ahead and we are hopeful that we shall put up a strong show.”
Coach AIP Antoine Ntabangayimana, who also doubles as national handball coach, is currently preparing the national team for forthcoming African Games qualifiers slated for September 4-19 in Congo Brazzaville.
Four players from Police make up the national squad, and they include; Gilbert Mutuyimana, Zakarie Tuyishime, Haruna Bizimana and Gilbet Mutuyimana.
Police Handball Club is also in preparations for Genocide Memorial Tournament slated for June 6-7, and is expected to host clubs from Burundi, Tanzania, DR Congo, Uganda and Kenya.
“The club is gearing up for a busy schedule which will require hard work, professionalism and focus. I am fortunate to be working with a group of focused young men who have a hunger to triumph,” AIP Ntabanganyimana said.
Police aims to reclaim the national league title and currently sits at the top of the log with 18 maximum points while APR sits in second position with 16 points.
Since its founding in 2003, Police Handball Club staffed its trophy cabinet with 22 trophies, among which include three national league cups, four Heroes Day Tournament, four Liberation Day cups and three Carré d’ AS cups.
