Police handball club are league champions

They promised to deliver and they delivered. They promised trophies and they kept the promise. They vowed to write history and they wrote it when they beat reigning champions Gicumbi 23-21 in a decisive national league match played on October 12 in the Northern Province.

The win sealed their fourth trophy of the season after winning the Labour Day, Memorial and Liberation cups.

The Rwanda National Police Handball Club maintained from start to the final whistle, a character of champion. The first half ended 12-10 and the second half ended 11-all.

Eric Kaneza scored the game-high six goals while Philbert Kamarade and Nkusi Muhirwa were on target four times each to help the police side register their third national league glory in the last four seasons and the 12th trophy in their cabin since the club started in 2003

The win increased the police tally to 43 with only one match left to the end of the season, nine points clear of Gicumbi who have 34 points with two games in hand.

Prior to the crucial match, the Rwanda National Police handball club coach Assistant Inspector of Police Antoine Ntabanganyimana said: “They [Gicumbi] are a good team but we have prepared ourselves well to snatch, yet again, three points from them. We have beaten them in all other tournaments this season and we will do it again.”

“We worked hard to win the league and everyone is really happy because we made it,” AIP Ntabanganyimana said, shortly after the match.

He added: “We are happy for this trophy and for a historical season because we won all the trophies this season.”
