Police foils shop robbery in Muhanga

Police in Muhanga District, in collaboration with the residents, arrested a man on Sunday, April 21, who had broken into a local shop.

The 48-year old suspect was caught red handed at about 9p.m, as he came out of the shop through a roof of the shop located in Kamugina Village, Gahogo Cell in Nyamabuye Sector.

The Police spokesperson for the Southern region, Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Habiyaremye, said neighbours called the Police after noticing that iron sheets had been removed from part of the shop.

"The suspect was an alleged burglar and was being trailed until he was arrested red-handed on Sunday, April 21, at about 9p.m, coming out of the shop with 14 smartphones, a digital camera, bags and money amounting to Frw21,500,’’ SP Habiyaremye said.

He thanked the residents for the spirit of neighbourhood watch and timely information sharing, which facilitated in foiling the burglary.

The suspect was handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) at Nyamabuye station. 

Article 166 of law determining offences and penalties in general, states that; any person convicted of theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one (1) year and not more than two (2) years and a fine of not less than Frw1 million and not more than Frw2 million, community service in a period of six (6) months or only one of these penalties.

In article 167, the penalty for theft doubles if the offender committed the crime through burglary, climbing or possession of keys other than the owner; the theft is carried out during the night or the theft is carried out by more than one (1) person.
