Police FC emerged convincing winners over rivals Rayon Sports, to set up a mouthwatering final against local giants APR FC, in the two-day knock out Prudence Tournament.
The tournament is organized by Society for Family Health (SFH) Rwanda in partnership with the Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) involving last season’s top four clubs.
The NGO injected Rwf11.5 million in the football tournament meant to popularise the use of condoms, particularly the Prudence brand, in the fight against HIV/Aids.
In the hot afternoon of January 31, Police FC faced off with Rayon Sports at a packed Nyamirambo Stadium. Whereas Police FC largely dominated the game, it was Rayon that broke the deadlock, through a goal scored by their striker Emmanuel Imanishimwe.
It was not long after he had scored in the 30th minute that Police FC striker, Jacques Tuyisenge equalized through a penalty kick in the 42nd minute.
The game ended in a draw, but Police FC masterminded well taken spot kicks that saw the side emerge winners with a score of 6-5.
Speaking after the triumph, Police FC head coach Andre Cassa Mbungo, expressed belief in his squad’s ability to go all the way and lift the trophy.
“We controlled the game very well and had the better chances. We trained well and the lads did their best; that is why we were rewarded with a win. The players are confident in their abilities and are ready to go all the way,” he said.
Police FC will tomorrow at 3:30pm face off against APR who eased past AS Kigali in a game that ended 2:0 to make it to the final.
The eventual winners of the tournament will walk away with Rwf3 million while the runners-up will gets Rwf2 million and the third placed team will get Rwf1m.
