Police equip locals with water rescue skills

Thirteen volunteers working with Red Cross in Karongi district, yesterday, started a five-day training in maritime.

The training conducted by Rwanda National Police Marine unit is meant to equip participants with rescue techniques in water bodies.

“It is necessary that people residing near water bodies acquire necessary skills to intervene in case of disasters in water bodies and that’s why we started this programme in partnership with Police,”  Isaac Habarugira, the coordinator of Red Cross in Karongi and Rutsiro districts, said.

He added: “After seeing the gap in maritime rescue operations, we requested Police to train our staff and we are glad they honored our request,” he added.

Assistant Inspector of Police Jean Bosco Mugwaneza said trainees will undergo both theory and practical lessons including swimming and how to use various gadgets like water jackets during rescue operations.
