Rwanda National Police on Thursday destroyed several drugs ranging from heroin, cocaine, and amphetamines that were seized separately from different drug traffickers.
The drugs that were incinerated include 13.5 kilograms of heroin that were seized from Cécile Mukarukundo and Samy Uwimana in February this year, 8 kilograms of cocaine seized from Sostene Izibyayo and Ddungu Hasifa last year and 2.5 kilograms of amphetamines seized from Lovine Njoroge Wanjiku in January this year.
Following the seizure, police kept the drugs in safe store as exhibit awaiting the trials of those that were caught in possession of them.
The cases have been fully litigated and people were sentenced – which allows the police to proceed with the destruction of the drugs.
Police transported the narcotics to Gatsata Sector of Gasabo District where they were placed into a deep heating incinerator and burnt them.
In a related development, following a targeted operation, Police in Burera district seized and also destroyed illicit brew and banned liquors that had a financial value of Rwf 20 million.
The destruction of the substances was observed by the Northern Regional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Johnson Ntaganda along with Burera District vice mayor, Joseph Zaraduhaye.
CSP Ntaganda warned all those that could be involved in distilling, smuggling and selling the illicit brew and banned liquors saying that, such substances are prohibited because they are not fit for human consumption.
“Besides having serious health consequences, they also contribute to insecurity as consumers are usually involved in crimes and domestic violence. We have to partner to ensure that we eliminate such substances; we can succeed faster if we cooperate,” CSP Ntaganda told Burera residents.
