Police destroys over 1400 liters of illicit brew

Police destroys 1500 liters of banned Illicit gin that include about 1500 liters of kanyanga and 276 cartoons of Chief Waragi were destroyed on May 21 in Nyagatare and Gatsibo districts.

 The illicit gin valued at over Rwf6 million was seized in the two districts in separate Police operations conducted in the last one month.

 About 1100 had been seized in Nyagatare while others were recovered from dealers in Gatsibo. Also destroyed in a public exercise aimed at raising awareness against drug abuse, are 6.5 kilogrammes of cannabis.

 While speaking to hundreds of residents, shortly after the destruction event, the mayor of Gatsibo, Richard Gasana warned those in the habit of dealing in illicit brew, and urged residents to step up their collaboration with police to protect their communities against such dangerous products.

 “At this moment, every citizen should be understanding the consequences related to drug abuse and be more determined to fight such. Do not connive or shield those who break the law...always endeavor to work with Police and local authorities to identify those who manufacture and deal in illicit brew,” Gasana said.

 “Security should always be everyone's first priority in all situations in order to protect our lives, our property and safeguard the development of our country," he added.

 Gatsibo District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police Eric Kabera, hailed residents for playing a vital role in community policing and providing information which leads to the arrest of lawbreakers.

 He further urged them to maintain the spirit and continue to report those who smuggle drugs and illicit liquor into the country, through their communities.

 “Partnership with residents to fight against dangerous products has been impressive. It has enabled investigations that have led to the arrest of suspects and confiscation of products that are dangerous. Let this partnership continue and send signal to criminals that Rwanda will not tolerate illegal and criminal actions,” CIP Kabera said.

 The banned illicit  substances are considered toxic drinks and against article 24 of the law governing narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors in Rwanda.

 It states that any drink that exceeds 45 percent of alcohol and any other drink which doesn't have the required quality for consumption shall be considered as narcotic drugs.

 Making, transforming, importing or selling narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances attracts a prison sentence of between three and five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million, under article 594 of the penal code.
