The ongoing operation against manufacture, sell and consumption of illicit brew and gin saw Rwanda National Police seizing and pouring over 1000 litres of the illicit products.
Most of the confiscated substances were seized in the Eastern and Southern provinces.
The destroyed substances include banned gin commonly known as Kanyanga
The illicit brews that were poured were in various local brand names, including Muriture, Yewemuntu, ibishwika ibikwangari, inyamerika and marokeli.
The outlawed substances were seized in Gisagara, Nyaruguru, Ngoma, Kayonza, Kirehe and Gasabo districts.
At least ten people suspected to be connected to this illegal business, were arrested.
The Southern region police spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Elude Gakwaya said consumption of such illicit substances has links with other crimes and effects on people's wellbeing and development.
“When one indulges in consumption of such substances, they do not get time to work; when they do not work, they cannot take care of the their families and these in turn become the burden of the state, which is not what we wish for in our people,” said Gakwaya.
Similar message was echoed by the Eastern Province spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi who called upon residents to strengthen the partnership with security organs in order to fight and prevent production, sell and consumption of such substances.
He observed that consumptions of the outlawed substances affects one’s thinking and productivity thus affecting their individual development and being the basis for other crimes like domestic violence, assault and theft.
Article 594 of the penal code stipulates in its second paragraph that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of up to five year years and a fine of up to Rwf5 million.
