In a bid to beef up public safety in the City of Kigali, Rwanda National Police (RNP) has stepped up operations to crackdown theft and burglary.
The ongoing operation has led to the recovery of assorted electronics including television sets, computers and home theatres among others.
The operation conducted in the last two days led to the arrest of two main suspects believed to be ringleaders of criminal gangs associated with house break-ins around the city, especially targeting electronics.
Police Spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Celestin Twahirwa identified one of the suspects as Alloys Murenzi, 30, said to be heading the criminal ring and the suspected buyer, whose names are withheld to facilitate ongoing investigations.
They are currently detained at Kicukiro Police Station pending further investigations.
“The suspects were arrested on Wednesday after thorough investigations facilitated by members of the public through community policing. The suspects are cooperative in helping police to recover more stolen equipment,” CSP Twahirwa said.
He appealed to members of the public to take precautions against theft by being careful about their property, and urged especially business premises to install CCTV cameras and employ night guards to ease police investigations in such cases.
“Everyone who buys equipments should keep receipts, because in such cases, they can help to identify what belongs to them, he also cautioned the public to desist from buying such suspicious materials which are likely to be stolen but rather buy from recognized dealers"
On Thursday evening, some of the victims turned up to identify their recovered gadgets at Kicukiro Police Station.
“Victims of theft are advised to check at Remera, Kicukiro, Muhima and Nyamirambo Police stations where recovered electronics are kept currently,” he said.
