Police continues intensified operations against drug dealers

Police in Nyarugenge, Gicumbi, and Rubavu districts, on Friday, arrested five suspected drug dealers with combined 1,426 pellets of cannabis.

One of the suspects identified as Fidel Mutabazi, 27, was arrested in Kirwa Village, Nyakabanda ll Cell, Nyakabanda Sector of Nyarugenge District with 1,092 pellets of cannabis.

Mutabazi had stashed the narcotics in radio speakers, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorette Umutesi, the Police spokesperson for the Central region, said.

"Reliable information was provided by members of the public that Mutabazi was enroute to Kigali from Rubavu and that he had stashed the narcotics in radio speakers," CIP Umutesi said. 

Other three drug dealers identified as Jean-Paul Mugisha, 25, Bahati Kabanda, 38, and Jean Marie Vianney Nsabimana, 24, were arrested with 222 pellets of cannabis in Gacurabwenge cell of Byumba sector in Gicumbi district.

Police in Gicumbi said that residents in Byumba provided the information about the dealers.

It is said that the trio bought the narcotics from another dealer in Nyankenke sector and were at the time supplying to consumers in Byumba and Gihembe refugee camp.

At Rubavu border post, one Sindikubwabo, 23, was arrested with 112 pellets of cannabis.

Sindikubwabo had hidden the narcotics in his inner clothes, Police said.

He was identified and arrested by Police officers at the border, who had searched him as he crossed into Rwanda from the DR Congo.

Under the penal code, especially in its article 263, major drug dealers face a term of between 20 years and life in prison. If drug-related acts are performed to a child, the penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of up to Rwf50 million.
