Police challenges Rutsiro business community on crime prevention

Hundred of traders operating in Gihanga Sector of Rutsiro District have been urged to take part in community policing and crime prevention activities.

The call was made by the Rutsiro Mayor; Emerance Ayinkamiye along with the District Police Commander, Supt. Boniface Kagenza during a meeting held over the weekend and brought together traders and local leaders in the district.

Ayinkamiye told traders that security is a pillar to sustainable development and that businesses can’t prosper where there is insecurity.

“We must work towards sustaining the security we have and keep close with security organs to prevent anything that can affect your progress,” said the mayor.

“The public is vibrantly involved in crime prevention through reporting offenders to security organs; this is due to our partnership with all categories of people including Community Policing Committees, the youth, opinion and local leaders. Although the business community has been part of this partnership, there is need for you to do more,” Ayinkamiye challenged traders.

Police has continuously embarked on public sensitization that focuses mostly on encouraging members of the public to report anyone they suspect of being involved in criminal activities.

“We are seeing a big impact of the awareness campaigns, the public give us credible information,” said Supt. Kagenza.

“Most of the suspects such as drug traffickers, thieves and smugglers that we arrested are due to information we get from the people,” he added.

The DPC reminded traders that cooperation in crime prevention is key in ensuring public safety and urged them to enhance their involvement in community policing activities like supporting night community patrol commonly known as Irondo.

“Strategies like Irondo seek to engage everyone in addressing the factors that contribute to crime and disorder – and it is the reason why the business community should cooperate with police, through delivery of timely information, in ensuring that these strategies work efficiently,” said the DPC

He also warned them against smuggling and selling illegal goods.

“You must be vigilant against criminals who infiltrate the business community. Always be on the watch and sensitize your fellow traders about the dangers that such people pause to the socio-economic development of our country,” he said.
