Police cautions public over counterfeit money

Rwanda National Police calls upon the general public to be vigilant and watch out for fraudsters spreading fake money in the economy.

The call follows an event on January 18 when Police in Ngororero District arrested a suspected fraudster, Byiringiro Jean d'Amour who was caught in possession with two fake notes of 5,000 Rwandan francs.

The suspect is currently held at Kabaya Police Station as more investigations are carried out.

"Police is at the forefront of stopping the practice of making and distributing fake money in the economy, and we have the capacity in terms of knowledge and skills to protect our country from this act. We however urge the public to be more vigilant and watch out for these criminals and report them in time," Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Western Region Police Spokesperson said.

A Police report in 2013 indicated that there was a tendency to forge the Frw2000, Frw5000 and US 100 dollar notes.

According the the penal code article 604, any person who counterfeits or circulates forged currency can face a jail term of up to five years and a fine of two to ten times the value of the counterfeit money.
