Police calls for fight against counterfeit of legal tender

Fighting manufacture or distribution‎ of counterfeited currency notes should be the responsibility of everyone to get rid of such financial crimes that affect businesses and the economy.

The call follows the arrest of a 35-year old man identified as Jean de Dieu Nizeyimana, on Monday in possession of fake currence

Nizeyimana was arrested in Bugeshi Sector in Rubavu District with the fake notes in Rwf 5000 denominations.

According to the police, the suspect was apprehended after residents of Bugeshi tipped the police about the suspect who was attempting to circulate the currency in different shops purchasing goods.

The Western region Police spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, pointed out that police will "stop at nothing" to arrest anyone involved in making and laundering fake money.

“We call upon everyone to be vigilant; the business community should be aware that even though the issue of fake money is not a threat, they might be targeted by the few individuals that are involved in this crime," IP Gasasira said.

"Through such bond of partnership, no one can escape justice."
