Police beat Sunrise in league opener

Police Football Club started the new season on a high note with a 3-2 win over Sunrise on their first encounter in Rwanda Premier League played Sunday at Nyamirambo stadium.

Osee Iyabivuze opened the scores in the first half for the law enforcers to make it 1-0 before the end of the first period.

Sunrise secured back-back goals in the second period to take the 2-1 lead. This was, however, short-lived.

Dominic Ndayishimiye brought the scores to level moments later.

It was, however, Nshuti Dominic Savio's goal in the dying 90th minute that proved the difference, making it 3-2 for Police before the final whistle.

The match between Police and Sunrise also started with road safety messages read out by captains of the two sides as part of the partnership between Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the national football body, FERWAFA.

Under this partnership, team captains of all clubs in the top flight will be reading road safety messages prior to match kick-off while static messages will also be on display on pitches.

The messages mainly focus on fighting drunk driving, using a phone while driving or crossing the road for the case of pedestrians, not tampering with speed governor and discouraging dangerous behaviours of speeding, among others.

The partnership reinforces the ongoing national road safety campaign called Gerayo Amahoro, which seeks to reverse the trend of road carnage and preventing hundreds of deaths registered every year due to human behaviours.
