Police arrest three people in connection with car theft

Rwanda National Police (RNP) arrested three people in connection with the theft of a vehicle from neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The car belonging to the national commission for refugees in Goma, DRC, was set to be sold on the black market in Rwanda at Rwf34 million.

The trio identified as Jean de la Croix Nzayisenga, Africa Furaha and Amri Uwihoreye, was arrested on Friday November 14 at the Union Trade Center (UTC) in the City of Kigali.

The vehicle was yesterday handed over to Saul Ruhanika, an employee of the National Commission for Refugees in Goma, who commended RNP for its quick response in helping to recover the car

Jean de la Croix Nzayisenga, a Congolese national, also the driver of the stolen vehicle is suspected of having connived with Amri Uwihoreye, a Rwandan taxi driver in Kigali to find a buyer for the stolen vehicle.

However, the supposed buyer became suspicious and asked them to send him pictures of the car

When he identified that the car belonged to HCR, he reportedly tipped Police which followed up and arrested the suspects.

The buyer, who wished not to be disclosed in media, tricked the suspects to drive all the way from Goma to Kigali where they unexpectedly arrested.

The suspects confessed to the crime and begged to be pardoned. Jean de la Croix Nzayisenga, who is the prime suspect, narrated that he planned to sell the car because he had become bankrupt

The trio is currently detained at Muhima Police station as investigations continue to arrest all those connected to this ring.

Chief Superintendent Celestin Twahirwa, the RNP Spokesperson commended the citizen who availed Police with credible information that led to the arrest of the suspects.

CSP Twahirwa said that Rwanda National Police has embarked on fighting cross boarder crimes by mainly cooperating with regional Police organs through sharing information on suspects.

He called for more cooperation to ensure criminal activities and others are prevented in the country.

“After the car went missing on Friday last week, we searched for it in the whole town of Goma but all in vain. I called Police in Rubavu requesting them if they had seen the car. Police in Rwanda responded back saying that they would do everything possible to find the car,” narrated Ruhanika.

“I had no hope that the car would be found, but I was surprised when I received news after a while that it had been recovered and that Rwanda Police also arrested the suspects. I am really happy for the great work well done by Rwanda National Police,” said Ruhanika.

Article 16 and 332 of the Penal Code condemn and punish theft of motor vehicles.
