Police arrest man for hacking father to death

Police have arrested Theophile Sindikubwabo, a 32 year old resident of Huye District in connection with a grisly murder of his father Tharcisse Nyandwi at their home in Shanga Cell of Maraba Sector.

The incident took place on Sunday at around 8:30pm following land wrangles between the family members.

Sindikubwabo allegedly hacked his father to death and went on the run but police later arrested him following investigations.

According to the police, the suspect is current held at Ngoma Police Station as investigations commence.

“We found the deceased lying in a pool of blood with cuts around his face and chest and we acted swiftly to apprehend the prime suspect,” Southern Province Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Hubert Gashagaza, said.

“We appreciate the timely information provided by the neighbors and residents in the area, which was useful in the investigations.”

He strongly called on residents to solve family troubles amicably and legally through the use of local mediators, leaders and courts, rather than taking the matters in their own hands, which usually escalates into serious crimes like murder.

“Serious family troubles over land, assets or any other thing should be solved early enough before they take a violent turn. Community members should look out for each other and try to solve such problems, and also inform police and local leaders on time.”

If convicted, the suspect will face a life sentence in prison as stipulated by Rwandan laws.
