Rwanda National Police (RNP) has a mandate to make the people living in Rwanda feel safe, involved and reassured – while it is also dedicated to providing high quality services, accountability and transparency.
On the other hand, Police has another responsibility; which is to contribute to social economic development through direct community service.
It is in this regard that on January 21 police joined residents in the construction of classrooms under the 12 Year Basic Education program in Nyagatovu Sector, Nyanza District.
The officers helped to lay up foundation and leveling of three classroom blocks at Nyagatovu Secondary School in a bid to provide shelter for the students.
“Rwanda Police is always a partner in development, and today, they have indicated that they have more to offer than their primary role of keeping law and order,” Director of Nyagatovu, Dieu Ntuyimana, said in an interview.
“These new classrooms being constructed will help to take care of the growing number of students and give them the kind of quality education that 12 Year Basic Education program offers.”
Police also utilizes such social events to network with citizens, whereby individual officers interact with residents and discuss solutions to national challenges.
Every year, RNP conducts the “Police Week” where several social activities are conducted aimed at improving the social economic wellbeing of Rwandans and environment protection.
During the week, police officers roll their sleeves and focus on activities like providing shelter to vulnerable genocide survivors' families, planting trees to fight environment degradation and sensitizing the public on community policing, among others.
Important as well, RNP officers join citizens every last Saturday of a month to The Rwanda National Police to participate in the Umuganda community work, which included paving and slashing bushy areas, planting trees and burning rubbish.
