[PHOTOS]: Youth volunteers in community policing clean polling sites

Members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP), on Saturday, conducted special communal work—Umuganda—where they cleaned polling sites ahead of the Monday parliamentary elections.

They youth group, whose main objective is to support nation human security and development activities, cleaned and decorated all polling centres across the country.

They were joined by Rwanda National Police (RNP) and other security organs as well as local leaders and residents.

In Ruhango District, Mayor Valens Habarurema, while addressing the youth shortly after Umuganda, thanked them for the voluntary work and being the pillar for the national development.

“You are stepping in the footsteps of the same young people that liberated this country, and what you are doing is part of the liberation process,” Mayor Habarurema said.

“You are the engine of this nation and good enough you have a foundation to base on. Support your families and communities to fight crimes and poor feeding, and ensure food security,” he added.

Abdallah Murenzi, the national coordinator of RYVCP, embarked on the role of the youth group in fighting crimes singling out drug trafficking and abuse, child abuse and gender based violence as “urgent issues” that requires “urgent response.”

 The District Police Commander of Ruhango, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Marc Gasangwa commended them for reinforcing community policing and human security activities.

Jean Bosco Mutangana, who is in charge of mobilization and training for RYVCP, said that their community development activities are in two aspects; conducting awareness campaigns against crimes and providing labour especially in supporting the disadvantaged and environmental protection activities.

“We set ourselves to prepare at least two organic gardens in every cell, two toilets, build and rehabilitate houses for vulnerable families, plant at least 10000 trees in each of the 30 districts, construct terraces to fight soil erosion but also support Agaciro Development Fund,” Mutangana said.

RYVCP has more than 260, 000 members across the country. Their human security and community development activities conducted between 2013 and 2017 were valued at over Rwf630 million.
