The communal exercise—Umuganda—which is part of the 8th edition of the Security and Hygiene campaign continued this Saturday in Rwampara and Kiyovu in Kicukiro and Nyarugenge districts, respectively.

The periodic campaign is conducted jointly by Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the City of Kigali as part of the ‘green, clean and safer Kigali’ drive.

Police officers and local leaders were joined by hundreds of city dwellers to clean streets and clear shrubs in the two cells.

The Deputy Inspector of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda reminded those who turned up for Umuganda of their duty to ensure cleanliness and crime-free communities.

“When you are hygienic and sanitation maintained it prevents you from diseases which affect the social wellbeing and classified as source of insecurity. You can be safe from any criminal act but insecure when you are sick,” DIGP Marizamunda said.

The Deputy Police Chief also reminded them to be vigilant against fraudsters especially those taking the advantage of technology calling people that they won lottery or seducing them with “empty scholarships” abroad.

Jackpots, he said, are won by only those who participated in it but also after being beyond doubt that they are the actual winners.

He urged them to always consult relevant authorities on any offer to avoid falling prey but also ensure that fraudsters are arrested to face justice.

DIGP asked them to support and strengthen community policing efforts in their respective communities through information sharing and increased night patrols.

The vice mayor for the City of Kigali in charge of Social Affairs, Muhongerwa Patricia observed that the joint exercise with RNP continue to produce good results in terms of safety and hygiene, but commended the residents for driving the concept.

She said that security, hygiene and sanitation should define anyone where they are seated, walk or live.
