[PHOTOS]: Taekwondo: Police scoop six medals

Police Taekwondo Club won six medals at the 2018 Taekwondo Ambassador’s Cup that ended on Sunday at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.

Benon Kayitare, who scooped a gold medal, was also named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the senior men’s category. For this, Kayitare won the trophy and a fully sponsored trip to Dubai courtesy of Ethiopian Airlines.

Other Police Taekwondo Club medalists at the annual taekwondo competition include Noel Vuguziga (silver), and the quartet of Police Constable (PC) Angelique Cyiza, Badur Tuyisenge, Emmanuel Kwibuka and Suvior Nizeyimana, who won bronze, each.

The impressive performance of Police Taekwondo Club alongside other local clubs guided Rwanda to the top of the country classification with combined ten gold medals in different age brackets, gender and weight categories.

A total 300 athletes from seven nations forming 18 clubs; took part in the two-day tournament sponsored by the South Korean Embassy.

The two exceptional fighters scooped trophies, medals and air-tickets to Dubai courtesy of event sponsors Ethiopian Airlines.

Inspector of Police (IP) Clotilde Uwamariya, the director sports in Rwanda National Police (RNP), said: “Taekwondo falls in the sports disciplines that the force is committed to develop in the country but also as a community policing tool.”

The RNP Taekwondo Club is just less than six months old following its official launch in April this year as a fifth sports discipline in the force. Others include Police Football Club, the locally highly-rated Police Handball Club, Karate and athletics.
