Rwanda National Police (RNP) joined residents of Nyamata Sector in Bugesera District on Saturday in a traditional monthly communal work--Umuganda.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Bruce Munyambo, commissioner for Community Policing in RNP led more than 100 Police officers to join the residents in the exercise.
The the human security activities were conducted in Nyabivumu Village of Nyamata Cell where they cleared a 12-hectare land where the government plans to construct houses for the disadvantaged families.
Present was also the vice mayor of Bugesera in charge of Social Affairs, Angelique Umwari and Murenzi Abdallah, the national coordinator for Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) as well as hundreds of members of the youth organization.
CP Munyambo thanked the residents for the big turn up and emphasized togetherness and partnership in security and development activities.
He noted that Umuganda is a tool for unity, cleanliness, security and social welfare.
"This bush was a breeding ground for mosquitoes that cause malaria and other insecurities like thieves that use it as hideout, so Umuganda serves as one of the home-grown solutions that everyone should embrace and be part of," CP Munyambo told the residents shortly after the exercise.
He also said that RNP counts on the partnership with the citizenry in policing and urged them to join ideas in what can make their communities safer.
He pointed at illicit drugs as the most pressing issue that requires immediate response by reporting dealers.
Vice mayor Umwari, thanked RNP for being a people-centred institution especially in human security activities.
She urged residents to be the policing force in their localities by strengthening night patrols and information sharing with the Police on suspected criminals.
Murenzi, on his part, said that the youth volunteers are committed to reinforcing the government human security activities and appealed to the young people to join the voluntary group in driving the agenda.
The youth group has more than 300, 000 members across the country.
