The Minister of Sports and Culture, Julienne Uwacu, yesterday, inaugurated a football pitch constructed by Rwanda National Police (RNP) in Rudakabukirwa, Munini Cell in Gikomero sector of Gasabo District.
The standard-size playground worth about Rwf153 million also has a pavilion and other facilities including dressing rooms and wash rooms.

Minister Uwacu said that the construction of the pitch signifies “work in the positive direction towards development of sports in the country” and hailed RNP for supporting ministry’s mandate.
She asked thousands of Gikomero residents, who turned up to witness the function, to sustain the facility as well as the existing peace and security.

“This is a sign that residents of Gikomero have a strong and special bond with RNP; maintain that spirit of partnership and make good use of the facility,” she said.
She also noted that such developments are significant indicators of good leadership spearheaded by President Paul Kagame.

Construction of the pitch commenced during this year’s “Police Week” period as part of the force’s activities to mark its 17th anniversary.
The inaugural function was also attended by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, the Mayor of Gasabo Steven Rwamurangwa and RNP commissioners and senior officers.

IGP Gasana reiterated the benefits of good leadership and went on to urge the residents to exploit the recreational facility and develop talents of young people, instead of indulging in lawlessness.
He said that with existing “peace and security in the country, masses should be able relax and exercise to be healthy and develop a good state of innovations”

The Police Chief, however, challenged residents to strive to have a crime free community.
“Let’s all commit to have a crime free Gikomero through prevention and reporting anything that could cause insecurity,” he said

Mayor Rwamurangwa noted that the existing cooperation between RNP and Gasabo has so far yielded positive outcomes including construction of police stations in various sectors, and community policing.

Gikomero and Gisozi police stations, among others, were constructed by the residents.
He pledged continued support and partnership with police in all human security and community policing activities.
