A team of Rwandan Police officers, on Thursday, attended the meeting in Zambia that discussed on the establishment of Zambia Formed Police Unit (FPU) ahead of its participation in Peace Support Operations.

The meeting held in the capital Lusaka, followed the invitation by IGP Kakoma. The Rwandan Police delegation is headed by Commissioner of Police (CP) Bruce Munyambo, the Commissioner for Community Policing. CP Munyambo is also the former Police Commissioner for the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

The meeting was also attended by a team from New York led by the Chief Selection and Recruitment, Ata Yanegun as well as officials from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Canadian Embassy in Zambia.

Participants will also visit Zambia Police Service (ZPS) schools and other operation units of the force.

IGP Kakoma appreciated the “contribution of Rwanda National Police (RNP) towards establishment of Zambia FPU.”

“I have received an invitation by my counterpart IGP Dan Munyuza to visit Rwanda, I promise to come along with FPU benchmarking team to Kigali, very soon,” IGP Kakoma said.

RNP started deploying FPUs in 2011 and currently maintains six contingents in Central African Republic (CAR) and South Sudan.

Formed Police Units (FPUs) are pledged by member states and subsequently deployed in peacekeeping missions as a trained and equipped, cohesive and fully self-sustained unit.

Rwanda National Police and Zambia Police Service signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2015 to partner in various policing disciplines, including training, exchange of information, crime prevention and tracking of fugitives.
