Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the City of Kigali have launched Umuganda-- communal work--activities aimed at promoting security and hygiene in the capital.
The communal activities that started in Gasabo District this Saturday are in line with the 8th edition of the security and hygiene campaign to strengthen the ideals of cleaner, greener and safer Kigali.
RNP and CoK were joined by thousands of city dwellers to clear shrubs in Rusororo Sector that used to be hideout for wrongdoers but also bleeding ground for mosquitoes.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda, while addressing the residents after the exercise, reminded them that ensuring safety and security starts with an individual where they live or move by reporting anything suspicious or people they suspect to be indulging in criminal activities.
He observed that hygiene also falls in the concept of security.
“You can't be unhygienic and say you're safe or developing! When you are sick you are not safe; when you live in a bushy area you are prone to diseases caused by mosquitoes. Security and hygiene are all aimed at improving the well-being of the citizenry," DIGP Marizamunda said.
He emphasized the need to join efforts in fighting high impact crimes gender based violence as well as narcotic drugs by reporting dealers that live in their communities.
The vice mayor for the City of Kigali in charge of Social Affairs, Patricia Muhongerwa commended the impact of RNP human security activities to supplement community development and the social well-being of the people.
She observed that the cleared bushes used to be hideouts for thieves and drug abusers.
The vice mayor also emphasized the importance of partnership and timely information sharing in fighting lawlessness and promoting sanitation and hygiene.
The security and hygiene campaign goes down to the village level. Umuganda will continue to all 35 sectors in the three districts of Gasabo, Nyarugenge and Kicukiro.
