[PHOTOS]: Police call for environmental protection in Special Community Work

Police has this Saturday joined residents of Kami Village, in Gasharu Cell, Kinyinya Sector in Gasabo District in a special Community Work (Umuganda).

The activity was organized by Rwanda National Police in partnership li. It was organized in the framework of of RNP’s ongoing efforts to preserve the environment and fight criminal offences that endangers the environment,

The activity focused on removing garbage from trenches for easy water passage, cutting off shrubs, and leveling a land where trees will be planted.

Commissioner of Police (CP), Emmanuel Butera in charge of Operations in RNP, thanked the good turn up of residents for the activity.

CP Butera reminded that, “a well-protected environment serves common interests of all people.”

“It is universally known that, environment, notably forests is a source good air we breathe and rain fall which is an important factor as far as agricultural production is concerned. This therefore gives all of us an obligation to join hands to preserve the environment.” Said CP Butera.

He further appealed to residents to tip Police on anyone involved in environmental degradation to ensure such people are arrested and brought to book.

While commenting on people who dig up sand and stones for construct activities, CP Butera said, the activity is should be done in respect of environment laws.

“We need sand and stones to build houses and other structures, this is a reality, but people need to think of all the consequences that would be brought about by degrading the environment.” Said CP Butera.

“Normally, when people have dug up sand and stones, they also need to cover up the pits and take a step to plant trees to prevent possible soil erosion.” He added.

Kimenyi Burakari, and Education Officer in Gasabo District, commended RNP for being on the forefront to preserve the environment.

Burakari challenged residents to join efforts to ensure that, the environment is collectively protected.

Jean Claude Muzindutsi and Emmanuel Nzabonantuma, are both residents of Kinyinya Sector, they thanked RNP for reaching out to them, support them in activity but more importantly the insight into environment protection they received from Police.

Early this week, RNP organized a three day environment training, which was attended by Police Officers and RDF reservists. The training aimed at equipping participants with skills and knowledge to effectively address environment issues in the country.
