At least 142 Police officers completed a two-month ‘drills instructors’ course’ at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari, on Wednesday.

The course with 13 of the trainees being women was designed to prepare officers who will spearhead the same training programme.

It focuses mainly on leadership and management, general instructional methods and psychology of learning. Other includes disciplines, physical fitness, drills and duties and skills at arms.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Munyuza, while speaking at the pass-out, thanked the officers for completing the intensive course.

“This training is essential in the professionalization of the force and to be ahead in the evolving policing landscape and emerging crimes, to guarantee the safety of people in Rwanda,” IGP Munyuza said.

He urged them to be the driving force in extending the same skills to other officers to have the same understanding and capabilities.

Drills and duties, the Police Chief said, will be a tradition in all Rwanda National Police (RNP) schools and units.

“Policing requires physical fitness, discipline and skills so as to be at the forefront in combating crimes,” the Police Chief said.

The Police schools, he said, will be capacitated to enhance the quality of training that addresses the emerging security challenges.

The pass-out was also attended by the Deputy IGP in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda.

The commandant of PTS, Commissioner of Police (CP) Vianney Nshimiyimana said that all the training period for Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) courses will be extended to produce officers that will be able to train others.

“This is a demanding and intensive drills instructors’ course designed to produce trainers; seriousness and discipline are critical, that’s why some of the officers couldn’t complete the course,” CP Nshimiyimana said.
