The ongoing national road safety campaign was extended to students of the Adventist University of Central Africa (AUCA), who were enlightened on road safety standards.

While speaking to over 800 students, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorette Umutesi, the Police spokesperson of City of Kigali, reminded them to always be vigilant when using the road, either as drivers or pedestrians.

“Proper road usage and respect for traffic control signs should be your priority when on the road. Doing that, is for your own safety and that of other road users,” CIP Umutesi said.

“When walking, always use the left side of the road facing the incoming traffic; avoid using a phone when crossing the road. We are in the campaign called Gerayo Amahoro, which emphasizes positive attitudes and decisions when using the road, we urge you to supplement these efforts and save lives.”

She urged them to be ambassadors of road security by sensitizing their friends, families and community members on proper road usage.

“Rwanda National Police always sensitize the public to avoid behaviors that leads to fatal accidents such as driving under influence of alcohol or other spychotropic substances, speeding, using the phone when driving or crossing the road and other traffic violations,” CIP Umutesi said.

She also took time to enlighten them on other criminal acts like GBV, child abuse, including serving alcoholic beverages to children and child labour; trafficking and abuse of narcotic drugs, and urged them to work with the Police and share information on such crimes.

Clement Mugwaneza, the Guild president of AUCA said that security is the responsibility of every Rwandan, especially the young people.

“This is an international university that combines students from 17 countries; if each one of us owns up and takes this message, no doubt it will reach out to many people to create change on our roads and safety in our country,” the Guild President said.
