Cyclists are among the major causes or victims of road carnage. Last year, out of over 650 road fatalities registered across the country, 183 were either caused or involved cyclists. Other 150 fatalities involved taxi-moto operators.
In an effort to address reckless riding behaviors, Rwanda National Police (RNP), on Thursday, August 3, shifted Gerayo Amahoro road safety campaign to commercial cyclists to influence behavioral change and instill a culture of safer road usage in compliance with traffic rules and regulations.
The road safety education was held at different sites as the Police and partners engaged cyclists in road safety best practices.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Teddy Ruyenzi, the Deputy Commissioner for Community Policing, while addressing cyclists in Kinyinya Sector, Gasabo District, reminded them to consider safety first.
"Safer roads contribute to health and development; they ease movement of people and goods, and the general economic development and social well-being of the people," ACP Ruyenzi told the cyclists.
Cyclists were told to desist from reckless behaviors such as holding unto moving vehicles, riding after 6p.m, which is prohibited; careless maneuvers, riding on pedestrian walkways, and overloading, which are the main cause of accidents involving cyclists.
