The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Munyuza has commended the general performance of teams that participated in the third edition of the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO) games, which concluded last week in Nairobi, Kenya.

Rwanda National Police (RNP) came second in the general classification of the regional annual law enforcement tournament with 46 medals in total, including 27 gold medals, six silver and 13 bronze.

RNP also won a gold medal in handball discipline; best overall in Karate with 12 gold medals, four silver and four bronze; topped the Taekwondo discipline with eight gold and two silver in Kumite, three gold in Kata as well as two trophies for the two categories; scooped silver in football as well as bronze in athletics and shooting.

While meeting all teams at the RNP General Headquarters in Kacyiru, on Wednesday, IGP Munyuza thanked them for their commitment and discipline during the week-long tournament and urged them to “build on your performance for future excellence.”

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy IGP in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda and commissioners.

“There has been improvement compared to previous tournaments but that’s no excuse for not being at the top of the game, so we have to aim to be the best in future competitions; learn from the past and be the best you can be in the future,” IGP Munyuza told the teams.

Seven out of 14 EAPCCO member states took part in the third edition, namely; Rwanda, hosts Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, South Sudan, Burundi and Uganda.

It was held under the theme: “Sports for strengthening regional cooperation and integration in the fight against transnational and organized crimes.”

RNP competed in six sports disciplines; football, handball, shooting, athletics, Karate and Taekwondo.

Rwanda will host next year’s tournament, and IGP Munyuza called for “early preparations.”

EAPCCO Games have 12 sports disciplines

“We were trusted with the task to host the 4th edition and we should be well prepared and in time to have a successful tournament, and that goes with ensuring that we compete in all sports disciplines,” the Police Chief said.
