Parents’ negligence contributing to drowning

The negligence of some parents, especially those residing near water bodies like lakes, and dams and even in water containers in homes, contribute to drowning of children who play in or around these dangerous water sources.

This is after it came to light that some children who have drowned in the recent past had either been left unattended at home or were not bared from playing in water bodies.

On Friday, a one year baby drowned in a pail full of water in Karambi Cell, Murindi Sector in Kayonza District.

Apparently, the baby had been left by the mother in attendance of the elder brother, who is also seven years old, an act considered as “negligence and acting irresponsibly.”

“This was an unfortunate but preventable act that occurred due to the negligence of the mother because you can’t leave a baby to take care of another baby,” said Superintendent Donat Kinani, Kayonza District Police Commander, while speaking to local leaders, teachers and parents on January 23.

He challenged parents and head teachers to always be on look out for their children and pupils respectively to avoid such disasters and appealed to everyone to always call Police toll-free lines – 110 for maritime and 111 for fire and other disasters, for immediate rescue.
