Police in Rubavu district, yesterday destroyed over 46, 000 litres of a locally made illicit brew called Ndululu, seized recently.
Ndululu is made out of dissolved bricks, sugar, water, fertilizers among others.
The public destruction also witnessed by officials from the justice sector was held in Rugerero sector.
The destroyed brew was seized on October 29 at a police roadblock en route to Nyabihu district from Rubavu at about 1:00am. They were loaded on two trucks
Three people including a woman identified as Marie Chantal Bampoyiki, said to have distilled the illicit brew have since been arrested, Police said.
Jeannette Bajeneza, the executive secretary of Rugerero told hundreds of area residents, who turned up to witness the exercise, that they shouldn't wait for Police to ensure their security because it's also their obligation to fight anything that affects their well-being.
She appealed to them to fight the making, selling and consumption of narcotic drugs.
Inspector of Police Solange Nyiraneza, the District Community Liaison Officer commended the residents for providing information that led to the seizure of the destroyed locally made illegal beer.
"Such brew is classified as narcotic drugs and therefore illegal in Rwanda," IP Nyiraneza, who warned dealers, said.
He urged them to continue providing information on people that are still involved in such illegal acts.
Supt. Emmanuel Twagirayezu, Police spokesperson for the Western Province faulted parents for failure to teach and monitor their children on the dangers of consuming such drugs, who end up being the majority victims.
He also warned drivers against facilitating trafficking of drugs and appealed to them to instead report those who try to use them in the illegal business.
"If you are caught transporting these illicit drinks, you will be arrested because you will be treated as an accomplice. So be careful about goods you transport," Twagirayezu warned.
