The Mobile Test Lane has concluded its vehicle mechanical inspection services in the Northern Province with at least 1056 vehicles inspected.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi, the Traffic and Road Safety Spokesperson, out of the 1056 that were tested, 556 vehicles passed the inspection and were issued with the certificate, while others had some mechanical faults that required to be fixed first.
The Mobile Test Lane, which was stationed in Musanze District since April 25, also served automobiles from the neighboring districts of Nyabihu, Rubavu, Rutsiro and Ngororero, all from the Western Province.
“The mobile test lane rotates in different provinces as part of Rwanda National Police’s programme to bring services closer to the people,” SSP Ndushabandi said.
“Among other things that are tested are gas emission and speed governors. 96 vehicles failed the gas emission test while 104 vehicles out of 501 with speed governors, failed the test. They were recommended to first fix these mechanical issues,” he explained.
He challenged owners of old vehicles that produce gas emission to always make it an urgent responsibility to check such vehicles with the Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre to ensure that such automobiles are no longer a problem to the environment and the people in particular.
The compulsory vehicle emission testing established under Prime Minister Instructions No. 005/03 of 27/12/2013 preventing air pollution caused by vehicular emissions and machines using petroleum products in Rwanda provides a regulatory system to manage and monitor implementation to assist with the phasing out of old vehicles.
“The services provided by motor vehicle inspection machine benefits the owners of the vehicles and the country in general as it helps to prevent accidents that would otherwise be caused by unnoticed poor mechanical conditions of vehicles.”
The Mobile Test Lane has full capacity to test between 100-150 in a day and mainly tests wheel alignment, brake system, lights, tyre pressure and gas emission among others.
The mobile lane serves owners of automobiles in the countryside, and supplements the two static motor Vehicle Inspection Centres; in Remera in City of Kigali and in Gishali Rwamagana District.
