Over 100 police officers donate blood to support patients in need

A total of 112 Rwanda National Police (RNP) officers from different departments and units at the General Headquarters in Kacyiru, Kigali, on Friday, August 21, donated blood to support patients in need of blood transfusions.

The exercise was conducted in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), as part of continued efforts to promote voluntary blood donation and strengthen the national blood supply.

RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Boniface Rutikanga, said blood donation is part of the Police’s broader commitment to protecting and saving lives.

“Our primary responsibility as Police is to protect people and their property. We want to protect healthy people, but when we donate blood, we also help save the lives of those who need it. Blood donation is therefore another way through which we fulfil our responsibility to protect and care for the people we serve,” ACP Rutikanga said.

He added that the RNP and RBC will continue strengthening their partnership by encouraging more police officers to participate in voluntary blood donation.

Mukakarangwa Christine, who is responsible for blood donor mobilisation at RBC’s Kigali branch, commended the RNP for supporting blood donation campaigns and mobilising officers to participate.

She said donated blood is needed by patients in different circumstances, including those undergoing surgery, emergencies, serious illnesses, and women experiencing complications during childbirth.

“Blood is essential in saving lives. Every donation can help a patient who needs a transfusion, and we encourage more people to donate blood regularly so that hospitals have enough blood to meet the needs of patients,” Mukakarangwa said.
